Pattern Recognition: 1-Change and 2-Change Sequences

    📚 Class 330–45 minutes📌 Pattern Recognition🎯 beginner

    Learning Objective

Identify and extend single-change and double-change patterns using numbers, geometric shapes, letters, and mixed alphanumeric sequences.

Section 1 — What do you already know?

Before we begin, write down anything you already know about: 1-Change & 2-Change Patterns

    1.
    2.
    3.

    Section 2 — Key Concepts

    1. What is a 1-change pattern?

    Answer:

A 1-change pattern changes only one feature in each step — for example, only the number increases (5, 10, 15, 20) or only the colour changes (Red circle, Blue circle, Green circle).

    2. What is a 2-change pattern?

    Answer:

A 2-change pattern changes two characteristics at the same time between consecutive terms — for example, the shape adds a side AND the number inside doubles (Triangle 2, Square 4, Pentagon 8, Hexagon 16), or a letter steps forward while a number steps back (A10, B9, C8, D7).

    3. Why is pattern recognition a core AI skill?

    Answer:

Machine learning and AI work by detecting patterns across massive amounts of data. When students learn to find rules in patterns, they are practicing the exact logic used in machine learning classification.

Section 3 — Check Your Understanding

Answer the following questions in your own words.

    1. Identify 1-change patterns (e.g. colour shifts, +4 arithmetic jumps, 90° clockwise rotations)

    2. Identify 2-change patterns involving simultaneous changes (e.g. shape changes AND number doubles: ▲2, ■4, ⬟8)

    3. Extend sequences using numbers, geometric shapes, letters, and mixed alphanumeric codes

    4. Formulate and write the step-by-step rule for repeating and growing patterns

Section 4 — Fill in the Blanks

Complete the sentences using the concepts you have learned.

    1. 1-Change & 2-Change Patterns helps computers _________________ patterns from _________________.

    2. The main difference between AI and a normal program is that AI _________________ from data rather than following fixed _________________.

    3. One real-world example of 1-Change & 2-Change Patterns is _________________, which uses it to _________________.

    4. The inputs used by an AI model are called _________________ and the output it predicts is called a _________________.

    Section 5 — Scenario Thinking

    🤔 Think about this:

A healthcare organisation wants to use 1-Change & 2-Change Patterns to assist doctors in diagnosing patients earlier. What data would the AI need? What challenges could arise? How can the team ensure the AI is fair, safe, and accurate?

    Section 6 — What Did I Learn?

✅ Three key ideas I now understand:

    1.
    2.
    3.

❓ One question I still have:

    ⭐ Challenge Task

If you were designing an AI solution using 1-Change & 2-Change Patterns, what problem would you solve? Outline a 3-step plan: (1) Problem statement, (2) Data to collect, (3) How to verify accuracy.
