Chapter 14 Notes
Unit 4 Workplace Safety · Chapter 14
Prevent Accidents & Office Ergonomics
Master computer workstation health: The 20-20-20 Rule for Eyestrain, Ideal Monitor Distance (20-30 inches), 100°-110° Elbow Alignment, and Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
Chapter 14 Theory
1. Workstation Ergonomics Blueprint
Monitor & Lighting:
- Distance: 20 to 30 inches (arm length).
- Top line of screen at or slightly below eye level.
- Position screen perpendicular to windows to eliminate glare.
Seating & Posture:
- Elbow angle: 100° to 110° with forearms parallel to desk.
- Wrists straight in neutral line (no upward/downward bend).
- Lower back supported by adjustable lumbar support.
- Feet resting flat on the floor or on an angled footrest.
2. Common Occupational Health Conditions
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:Compression of median nerve in wrist caused by repetitive typing with bent wrists.
Computer Vision Syndrome:Eyestrain, burning eyes, and headaches from low blinking rates. Solved by 20-20-20 rule.
Repetitive Strain Injury:Damage to muscles and tendons of neck, shoulders, and arms from prolonged static postures.
